SAP S/4 Migration - Challenges Unlocked

This post is part of a series of GyanSys Solutions Lab's series titled SAP S/4 1709 Simplification Digest.

While companies are getting ready for SAP S/4 Implementation, Migration Strategy is a critical decision that needs 360-degree analysis of the Legacy System Landscape, Business Processes, and System Integrations. GyanSys unlocked challenges and assisted clients with their SAP S/4 Journey.

Business digital transformation is not an option for companies, but rather a necessity. Enterprise software is a container for this transition. SAP is continuously releasing new application software, development platforms, digital hardware, in-memory databases, cloud platforms, and supporting organizations with Digital Transformation. The SAP Enterprise Software industry is humming with buzz words…HANA, Realtime, In-Memory, Cloud Applications, Public Cloud, Private Cloud, Hybrid Cloud, On-Premise, Mobile, Fiori Applications - Versions 1511, 1610, 1709. What is relevant today may be changed beyond recognition in a year.

Overview

What becomes important is the “Experience of working in a dynamic environment for S/4 Conversion”.

GyanSys embarked on a journey of exploring SAP innovations and implementing methods, tools, technology, and applications for clients who are on the journey of SAP S/4 transformation.

SAP presented GyanSys with the HANA Innovation Award in 2017 based on the successful delivery of several HANA initiatives (HANA Migration & S/4 Upgrade) across many customers.

Assessment

Over the years, companies implemented different versions of SAP and some are still rolling out SAP ECC versions as their project roadmaps were to roll out based on functional or regional phases. Looking back on the system landscape and assessment of different versions and options is an important strategy decision.

For business transformation projects, the assessment of current capabilities is an important activity that would provide direction for future technology adoption.

Migration Variables

Unlike previous versions of SAP, S/4 HANA calls for an iterative loop of IF, and ELSE conditions while going for SAP S/4 conversion. There are multiple variables in the overall spectrum of “Application Existence”. Choosing the right path minimizes business disruption, saves costs, and enables the business to quickly adapt to the changing environment.

SAP provides different application software options suitable for different business situations. As an example, Companies with heterogeneous landscapes may adopt Central Finance instead of rolling out S/4 for all locations.

While working on SAP S/4 migration, it is very important to look at the SAP S/4 evolution over the last 4 years.  Some of the companies that adopted early versions of SAP are continuously adjusting to new versions. With a wait-and-watch strategy, some companies stand to gain the latest benefits by avoiding the SAP transition.

Migration Strategy

For the S/4 transition, whether to go for brownfield or greenfield implementation is an important strategy element. Since SAP is building new applications only on the HANA database, brownfield involves a two-step process - Database migration and Application migration.

Greenfield implementation provides a completely new look into the SAP's latest innovations and SAP's old version is a legacy application and a new SAP activate methodology can be invoked to implement as greenfield.

One of the other critical migration decisions to be made,

  • What edition of software to be taken and
  • Where to host the software
